Chaps Baseball Improves to 21-8 with Three Games to One WJCAC Series Win Over NMMI

The Midland College baseball team was locked in for their conference series test at the New Mexico Military Institute last weekend. The Chaparrals were very aware of the Broncos recent performances including a 2-2 series split versus first place New Mexico Junior College. The Chaps took care of business in their road trip to Roswell, winning the series three games to one.
The four games were high scoring affairs with the Chaps scoring 60 total runs to the Broncos' 23 runs scored. The game scores were: 17-3 (W), 13-7 (W), 7-3 (L) and 23-10 (W) and improved Midland College's season record to 21-8 and 9-3 in the WJCAC. MC is currently in second place in the conference standings, one game behind the NMJC Thunderbirds.
MC's Tyler Boudreau picked up his sixth win in as many games in game #1. Boudreau struck out six NMMI batters over the five inning run rule win. Carson Laws (3-1) picked up the win in game two facing two batters. Midland College's Daniel Bass had a strong outing throwing 5.1 innings in the Chaps sole loss on the weekend. Freshman Ryan Marton got the game four win.
Midland College catcher Trace Holcomb performed in stellar fashion, feasting off NMMI pitching in three of the four games. Holcomb, a sophomore from Weatherford, TX, went 6-11 (.545) with 10 RBI and a HR in three games played.
Midland College's Matt Guthmiller continues to be among the nation's leaders in batting average (.431) good for 36th in NJCAA Division I. Brock Tijerina is tied for 37th place in RBI with 37 to date. Boudreau is currently the nation's leader in strikeouts with 73 in 2024 and he is tied for 10th place with six wins this season. The speedy Kyle Lewis is tied for 27th place in total steals (19) in the NJCAA.
The Chaparrals will continue WJCAC play when they travel to Clarendon, Texas for a four-game conference series with the Clarendon College Bulldogs. The games are scheduled to be played on Thursday, March 28, 2024 with a double-header starting at noon. Midland and Clarendon will play a second double-header on Friday, March 29th with the first pitch at noon.
