The Midland College Chaparrals baseball team will open the 2026 season on the road versus Wharton County Junior College. The Chaps, ranked 25th in the NJCAA Preseason poll, were scheduled to open the season on January 24th and 25th in a three-game series versus Alvin Community College, in San Antonio however freezing cold weather all across Texas forced the cancelation of those games.
The Chaps traveled to Wharton, TX to open the season versus the WCJC Pioneers on Wednesday and Thursday. Those games were originally schedule to be played at the University of the Incarnate Word in San Antonio, on Friday and Saturday, however, a scheduling conflict at the UIW baseball field compelled the WCJC and MC coaches to work on a schedule modification.
On Wednesday, January 28th the Chaparrals and Pioneers will play a double-header beginning at 2:00 p.m. The two teams will also play a single game on Thursday, January 29th. That game is scheduled for a 1:00 p.m. first pitch.
The 2026 season is the 25th anniversary of the Midland College Chaparrals baseball team. This season the Chaps will wear commemorative patches on their game caps in recognition of the program's proud history of excellence.
The MC baseball program played their inaugural season under the guidance of Steve Ramharter. Ramharter recorded a 206-84 overall record in 5+ seasons as head coach. Replacing Ramharter was David Coleman. Coleman is the all-time wins leader at Midland College, going 412-241-1 in his 11 seasons at the helm.
Stepping up to stewart the team beginning in 2018 was Hector Rodriguez. Rodriguez joined the Chaparrals as Ramharter's assistant in the 2006 season. Ramharter departed the program that same year with Rodriguez serving as the interim head coach. Coach Rod then served as assistant coach for Coleman for 11 seasons before being selected to replace him.
Rodriguez has served as head coach for 8+ seasons, including a 34-game stint as interim head coach in 2006. Rodriguez is second in career coaching wins in Midland College program history with a 315-136 overall record (includes 27-7 in 2006).
The Chaps finished 2025 with an impressive 46-11 record and a second place finish in the WJCAC. Top returnees for the Chaparrals include Dylon Myrow, Augden Hallmark, Luke Wheatley, Logan Flores, Jorge Gil and AJ Velarde.
