When the Midland College men's basketball team faced the NMJC Thunderbirds, they were slated to play their fourth consecutive NJCAA Top 20 opponent. Beginning with the opening game of the 2025 WJCAC schedule, against then #18 Odessa College on January 6, 2025, the Chaparrals would also face, in succession, then #10 Howard College followed by then #10 (the next week) Frank Phillips College. When the Chaps tipped off against NMJC, the T-Birds were ranked fifth nationally.
The Thunderbirds entered the game with an impressive 16-2 record, including 2-2 in conference. Midland College displayed their toughness in the face of stiff opposition to secure a 11-point lead at the intermission. That lead spelled the difference in the contest as NMJC outscored the Chaparrals by one point (42-41) in the second half. Final score Midland College 78, New Mexico Junior College 68.
The win improved MC's overall record to 14-4 and 4-0 in the WJCAC. Midland College sits atop the conference standings 1/2 game ahead of South Plains College, in a tightly contested race.
MC was buoyed by the offensive output of Jaden Kempson, Antoine Hurns, Grigorije Avramovic and Trey Clarke. The Chaparrals quartet accounted for 68 of the team's 78 total points in the game with Kempson recording 21 points followed by 19 points by Bo Hurns, 18 by Avramovic and 10 by Clarke.
Midland College was rewarded for their recent successes, by earning a #12 ranking in the most recent NJCAA Men's Division I poll (01/21/25)
