Chaparrals Sophomore Night
South Plains College Texans vs. Midland College Chaps
Midland, TX
Tonight's final game of the regular season should be an offensive showcase with both teams capable of putting up huge scores. The deciding factor will be which team can play solid defense over the 40 minute contest. For the Chaparrals, the game can provide a measure of revenge versus South Plains College after suffering a loss to the Texans at Levelland on February 3rd (SPC 105, MC 96).
The Chaps enter the night with a 21-8 record, including 11-4 in conference. South Plains comes in at 23-6 and 13-2 in the WJCAC.
Each team enters the game ranked in the NJCAA's Top 20. Midland is currently ranked #18 after being ranked as high as tenth. South Plains is ranked #8 nationally, but opened the season as the #1 team in the NJCAA preseason polls. Both teams have secured a place in next week's NJCAA Region 5 Tournament in Waco, TX so tonight's game is purely about pride. SPC is the #1 seed from the WJCAC and Midland College will settle in as the second or third seed from the West.
On Monday, Midland College overwhelmed a pesky Clarendon College team. MC was ahead for much of of the contest, by as many as 24 point only to cede the lead during the second half. Clarendon College pulled to within eight points in the second half before the Chaps put on a late surge to pull away, 88-74. The Chaparrals were led by Antoine Hurns' 21 points and seven rebounds. MC received contributions from Robert Dix who scored 17 points and Trey Clarke who posted 16 points in the game.
In the upcoming NJCAA Region 5 Tournament, the Chaps will likely open play on Wednesday, March 12th at 3:00 p.m. or 5:00 p.m. depending on the final WJCAC standings. MC is the #2 team in the West headed into tonight's game. The top four teams from the North and top four from the West qualify for the post-season tournament in Waco, hosted by McLennan Community College.
