MC Chaparrals Finish Fall Semester at 13-0 and Remain Third in December 8th NJCAA Poll

The Midland College Chaparrals very likely exceeded the preseason expectations of nearly everyone, going 13-0 at the break including wins over, then #1 ranked Trinity Valley Community College and NJCAA Top 20 ranked Mineral Area College. The Chaps were picked 5th in the WJCAC Coaches Pre-Season Poll behind Odessa, South Plains, Howard and New Mexico.
Despite those projections Midland College has proven to be a better and more talented team than many expected. MC is currently ranked third in the NJCAA with an impressive 13-0 record in the fall semester. Coaches Isaac Fontenot-Amedee and CJ Williams have the Chaparrals playing at high level.
In the final two games of the semester, MC traveled to Big Spring to compete in the Mark Adams Classic at Howard College. The Chaparrals took on NJCAA Region 5 North team, Temple College on Thursday, December 4th. Midland College, led by freshman guard Yeison Liberato's 31-point outburst, defeated the Temple College Leopards by a score of 108-75. Liberato, from the Dominican Republic, also pulled down three rounds to go along with three assists, two steals and a blocked shot. Solomon Ominu and Cayden Reed chipped in with 14 and 10 points respectively. Ominu also recorded eight rebounds in the contest.
Midland College squared off against #18 ranked Mineral Area College in the Chaparrals final game of the semester. MAC got off to a slow start in the first half and trailed the Chaps by as many as 24 points. Over the course of the second half, the Cardinals pulled closer but ultimately lost to the talented Chaps by a score of 89-79. Sophomore Antoine Bo Hurns led MC with a 27 point, eight rebound, three steals and one assist performance. Freshman Nayte Spargo and fellow freshman Cayden Reed posted double-figures in scoring at 17 and 12 points versus Mineral Area College.
MC enters the break undefeated while averaging 88 points on nearly 53% shooting from the floor. Midland College also shoots 34.3% from the three-point arc and 74.6% from the charity stripe.
Following the break, the Chaparrals will have a one-game tune-up versus Strength N Motion then its on to the WJCAC slate. The Western Junior College Athletic Conference has staked its claim as the toughest in the NJCAA with #9 Howard College, #12 Odessa College, #13 South Plains College and #23 New Mexico Junior College,along with Midland College as members. As of the most recent NJCAA Men's Division I poll, five of nine WJCAC men's basketball teams are ranked in the NJCAA's Top 25 teams. The NJCAA Region 5 Tournament which will be played in March 2026 at Odessa College only has room for four WJCAC teams in the field.
