Hurns Game-High 22 Points Not Enough to Propel Chaparrals to NJCAA National Tournament Win
The Midland College Chaparrals basketball team finished the season with a 27-7 record including an opening round loss in the NJCAA Men's Division I Basketball National Tournament.

The Midland College Chaparrals basketball season came to an end with a loss in the NJCAA National Tournament. The Chaps who entered the tournament as the #7 seed, received an opening round bye into the second round where they faced Walters State Community College (TN). Walters State CC who received a #10 seed into the tournament, advanced into the second round after defeating South Georgia State College (93-84).
MC's Antoine Bo Hurns set the pace for the Chaps, scoring 11 of the teams first 15 points. Midland College went toe-to-toe with Walters State throughout the first half. The Chaps trailed the Senators by eight at the intermission (49-41). Midland College freshman Cayden led all scorers at the break with 12, followed by Hurns' 11 points. Reed also contributed five assists, three rebounds and a steal in the first half.
In the second half the Chaps fell behind by as many as 11 points only to fight back to within two points by the midway point in the half. The Senators extended the lead back to nine points with 7:30 left in the game. Once again Midland College mounted a furious comeback pulling even with Walters State (75-75) with 5:34 left. MC remained in close contact with the Senators as time dwindled down in the game. With the score 84-82 with 2:19 remaining in the game, Midland College began to struggle offensively going scoreless over that time span. Final score Walters State Community College 94, Midland College 82. With the loss Midland College's season came to an end with a final season record of 27-7.
Midland College's three-point and free throw shooting percentages were not up to the teams capabilities at 30.4% from three and 62.5% from the charity stripe. Walters State made more free throws than Midland College attempted. Despite those areas of concern, MC had a chance to get the win with as few as two minutes remaining in the game.

The successes of the 2025-2026 season gives the Chaps and Coach Isaac Fontenot-Amedee something to build on with several talented freshmen contributors expected to return for the next school year.
