GOLF: Midland College Linksters Aim for National Championship
The Midland College golf team began the 2022-2023 year winning championships in three of their first five fall events. In an interesting bit of symmetry, the #3 ranked Chaparrals, won three of their final five tournaments of the spring semester. Midland College, winners of eight team titles this year, is focused on finishing with one more championship; the 2023 National Championship.

MIDLAND, TEXAS - The Midland College golf team began the 2022-2023 year winning championships in three of their first five fall events. In an interesting bit of symmetry, the #3 ranked Chaparrals, won three of their final five tournaments of the spring semester. Midland College, winners of eight team titles this year, is focused on finishing with one more championship; the 2023 National Championship. Coach Walt Williams is encouraged by the team's recent performances and hopes to lead the Chaps to its first national title since 2008.
The national tournament field of 24 teams with five players per team with four rounds (72 holes) of competition. Each team is allowed one alternate in the event. Team's will enter a five member team, designated as players 1-5. Following each of the four rounds, teams will count the scores of their four lowest individual totals. The Midland College Chaparrals will enter the tournament with Chris Waldrup, Alfie Robinson, Davis Seybert, Thomas Vestergaard, Max Cavazos and Jack Cubitt; three sophomores and three freshmen. This year's national tournament is the sixth consecutive for coach Walt Williams and the 35th straight for the MC golf program. Under Williams the Chaps have finished 3rd in 2022, 3rd in 2021; 2020 was the COVID-19 year; 3rd in 2019 and 3rd in 2018.
Competing teams include: #1 Hutchinson CC (KS); #2 New Mexico JC; the #3 ranked Midland College Chaparrals; #4 Dodge City CC (KS); #5 Odessa; #6 Indian Hills CC (IA); #7 Eastern Florida State; #8 McLennan CC (TX); #9 Ranger (TX); #10 Garden City CC (KS); #11 Western Texas; #12 Pima CC (AZ); #13 McCook CC (NE); #14 Blinn (TX); #15 Wallace State CC (AL); #16 Iowa Western CC; #17 Central Alabama CC; #18 John A. Logan (IL); #19 Eastern Wyoming CC; #20 Southern Union State CC (AL) along with unranked Estrella Mountain CC (AZ); Spartanburg Methodist (SC); Eastern Arizona and Tyler JC (TX). Dodge City, Midland, Eastern Arizona State and McCook each won their respective NJCAA District Championships. Western Texas, Blinn and Tyler were each selected as at-large teams.
The NJCAA Men's Division I Golf Championship will be played at the Sand Creek Station Golf Course in Newton, KS (par 72/7,200 yards). Sand Creek Station hosted the 2015 national tournament with the Chaparrals finishing in 16th place.
