Lady Chaps Basketball Falls to #2 Ranked NMJC, Eight Game Home Unbeaten Streak Snapped at Chap Center

Monday's WJCAC matchup between the visiting NMJC Lady T-Birds and the Midland College Lady Chaps was the typical game between conference foes. NMJC, then ranked #4 nationally (now #2), presented a size matchup problem for MC. The Lady Thunderbirds also suited out 16 team members giving NMJC a depth advantage as well.
New Mexico Junior College seized control in the first quarter, outscoring Midland College, by a score of 20-12. The lone bright spot for MC was the hot shooting of sophomore guard, Brianna Vargas. El Paso native, Vargas went 3 of 3 total FGs, including 2-2 from the three-point line. In the second quarter, neither team scored at a high level with NMJC outscoring MC 13-9. New Mexico JC lead at the break 29-25.
The second half saw the Lady Thunderbirds pull away scoring 15 in the third quarter and 21 in the fourth. Midland College recorded five points in the third quarter and 16 in the final stanza. When the dust settled, NMJC handed MC their first home loss of the season (65-46). The loss dropped Midland College to 13-6 on the season and 2-2 in conference. New Mexico JC improved to 19-1 overall and 4-1 in the WJCAC.
Midland College was led by Vargas' 17 points, three assists and two rebound night. Freshman Diana Szakolczi chipped in with six points and 10 rebounds.

The Lady Chaps will have an open date on Thursday, January 23, 2025. They return to WJCAC play on Monday, January 27th @ 5:45 p.m. when they host Western Texas College at the Al G. Langford Chaparral Center.
