The Midland College Lady Chaps put on an impressive and complete game Monday night versus Clarendon College. MC, 18-10 overall, improved to 7-6 in the WJCAC with Monday's 85-45 win over the Bulldogs. The win evened the season series between MC and CC at one win each. The loss dropped Clarendon College to 21-8 on the season, including 7-6 in conference.
With one final game left to play in the regular season, Midland College's post-season possibilities improved from a "thread thin" to "likely". With the Bulldogs and Lady Chaps each at 7-6, the final NJCAA Region 5 seed (#4 West) has not been decided. Tonight's results will add clarity to the situation.
Midland College will host #8 ranked South Plains College at the Chaparral Center on Sophomore Night, while Clarendon College will travel to Hobbs, NM for a game versus #3 ranked New Mexico Junior College. An MC win paired with a CC loss would plant the Lady Chaps into the Region 5 Tournament as the fourth seed from the WJCAC. The reverse is also true. A Clarendon win coupled with a Midland College loss and the Lady Bulldogs would earn the final berth in the Region 5 Tournament as the fourth seed from the WJCAC.
If both Midland College and Clarendon College, win or lose tonight, the two teams would remain tied and they would be forced to play a one-game, play-in for the final spot. Discussions regarding a potential play-in game date, time, location are taking place.
In Monday's game, Midland College recorded their fourth consecutive WJCAC win, including a huge win on the road versus, then #1 New Mexico Junior College. MC was led by Brianna Vargas' 17 points and five rebounds. Toyah Montgomery chipped in with 16 points and eight boards, while Riley Burd and Diana Szakolczi scored 14 and ten points respectively.
Tonight's game will require the Lady Chaps to continue their recent outstanding play and high-level execution on both ends of the court. South Plains defeated Midland 67-57 in Levelland on February 3rd.
Midland College will be honoring their seven departing sophomores in a ceremony, immediately following the conclusion of the women's game. Lady Chaps Burd, Vargas, Endija Sedlina, Montgomery, Dee Henderson, Josie Hummel and Janna Dauer will each be recognized in their final home game at the Al G. Langford Chaparral Center.
