WJCAC Play-In Game vs. Clarendon College
Sunday, March 9, 2025 @ 4:00 p.m. (CDT)
Levelland, TX
The Midland College Lady Chaps basketball battled back from near, post-season elimination, as they put on an impressive run in the second half of the Western Junior College Athletic Conference (WJCAC) race to force a "play-in" game for the final spot in the NJCAA Region 5 Tournament. The play-in game between the Lady Chaps and the Clarendon College Lady Bulldogs will be held on Sunday, March 9th @ 4:00 p.m. (CDT) at the South Plains College Texan Dome in Levelland.
The Levelland site was selected as a neutral location for the game. Special thanks to Roger Reding and the SPC Athletic Department for agreeing to host the contest.
The play-in was forced due to both MC and CC finishing the WJCAC season with 7-7 records. The top four teams in the WJCAC and the North Texas Junior College Athletic Conference (NTJCAC) advance to the Region 5 Tournament. Clarendon and Midland tied for fourth place in the WJCAC final standings. WJCAC by-laws look first to head-to-head competitions between teams to solve ties. Midland College and Clarendon College split the home and home series, with the Lady Bulldogs winning in Clarendon on January 30th (78-71) and the Lady Chaps taking the second game on March 3rd in Midland by a score of 85-45.
The second tie-breaker is called "power points" which assigns point values for wins in conference with the highest point values going to the conference champion team(s). Points are awarded to the remaining conference teams in descending order of finish (the most points for the first place team(s) and the fewest points for the last place team). When the power points were applied, Midland College and Clarendon College scored the exact same number of power points. For the final spot in the NJCAA Region 5 Tournament, WJCAC by-laws call for a head-to-head game to ultimately decide which team gets into the Region 5 as the #4 seed from the Western Junior College Athletic Conference (Midland or Clarendon).
The North Texas Junior College Athletic Conference (NTJCAC) will have a similar scenario with a play-in game between Temple College and Weatherford College on Monday, March 10th. TC and WC tied for the fourth place spot in the Northern Conference. Their play-in will resolve the final qualifier from the NTJCAC into the Region 5 Tournament.
The winner of today's MC/CC play-in will advance to the Region 5 Basketball Tournament in Waco (March 12-15) on the campus of McLennan Community College to take on the McLennan Community College Highlassies on Thursday, March 13th @ 7:00 p.m.
